News crews in Jefferson this week to interview family of local hero -

Jefferson, Iowa - 27 years old Captain Matthew Nielson of Jefferson was killed during an indirect fire attack with insurgents in Iraq on June 29th. Nielson was born in Omaha in 1984 and grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, Ogden and Jefferson where he was homeschooled. He worked at the Fareway store in Jefferson during and after high school and had been promoted to produce manager. He graduated from UNI in 2008 as cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal and more. He is survived by his parents Christine and Roger Nielson of Jefferson along with 3 brothers and 4 sisters. 

Funeral arrangements are pending.
